Wallace College Receives Grant to Grow Poultry Science Interest

Eufaula, Ala. – Wallace Community College – Dothan recently received a $3,500 grant from the USPOULTRY Foundation and given in part by Wayne Farms. The funding, which is intended to grow student interest in poultry science, will fund an interactive Poultry Science Expo on the Wallace Campus on April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to noon in Cherry Hall.

The event is free and pre-registration by April 6 is required.  (www.wallace.edu/poultryscience)

Poultry is big business in Alabama, and the career possibilities are wide-ranging. According to the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, the poultry industry has a $9,719,158,400 economic impact on Alabama’s economy, accounting for over 44,000 jobs statewide. The USPOULTRY Foundation supports recruiting and training the brightest students, funding scientific research, fostering student scientists, and promoting careers in the poultry and egg industry.

To encourage students to enter the poultry industry, WCCD and Auburn University collaborate in a 2+2 option, where students attend WCCD their freshman and sophomore years and transfer to Auburn’s Poultry Science School for their junior and senior years. While at Wallace, students take all of their basic transfer classes, including a poultry production class, before transferring to Auburn.

A Poultry Science degree can lead to careers in poultry and food science, research, or preparation for veterinary, dental, medical, or pharmacy school.

Students who attend the Poultry Science Expo will hear more about the 2+2 option at WCCD, including the AGP 130 Poultry Science course that is a prerequisite for Auburn. A representative from the Poultry Science program at Auburn will present information on coursework required for a bachelor’s degree as well as career options. Keystone Foods and Wayne Farms representatives will give information about current job opportunities for Poultry Science graduates. The Alabama Poultry and Egg Association will also be present.

Attendees will have an opportunity to speak with representatives and get more information after the session.
