Frequently Asked Questions about Scholarships


Q. How do I apply?
A. Applications are available on the College’s Web site under Financial Aid, Current Scholarship Opportunties.

Q. Do I need anything else besides an application?
A. Yes, two letters of reference are required with ALL applications. Letters of recommendation may be uploaded during submission, emailed or mailed to the Foundation Office.

Q. When are the applications due?
A. The deadline varies as scholarships are awarded each semester.

Q. Where do I turn in the application?
A. All applications should be submitted online.

Q. How are scholarship awards determined?

A. Financial need, past scholastic performance, and the answers to your application questions all impact awards.

Q. Who makes the selections?
A. A committee consisting of four WCC employees that represent various College Departments.

Q. Can I receive more than one scholarship?
A. No, the need is much greater than the number of scholarships and the Foundation want to help as many students as possible.

Q. Do I have to be a full-time student?
A. Yes, we ask that you maintain a course load consistent with your program of study. If a student is in one of the allied health programs, nine credit hours may be considered a full load.

Q. How much money is usually awarded?
A. It varies by scholarship. However, usually scholarship awarded range from $500 to a full-time scholarship for a semester. 

Q. Do I have to have a specific field of study to qualify?
A. For some scholarships, yes; for others, no specific field of study is required. 

Q. Do I need to be a United States citizen to apply?
A. No, international students as well as eligible non-citizens who are permanent residents of the United States are welcomed and encouraged to apply.

Q. If I receive an award, how do I get the funds?
A. The Foundation will notify the Financial Aid office to activate your scholarship. All scholarships are given through the College; no checks are written directly to the students. 

Q. How can I use the scholarship funds?
A. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, and./or books, unless otherwise stated in scholarship description.

Q. If I receive financial aid or help from other sources, do I still qualify for WCC Foundation scholarships?
A. Yes, as long as there is not a duplication of services. In other words, if you are receiving a full scholarship (tuition, fees, and books) from another source, the Foundation cannot duplicate what you are already receiving.

Q. How long do I have to use the funds?
A. Usually, most awards are for one semester. Some scholarships are renewable if all the terms of the scholarship are met. Financial Aid will be notified about the renewable scholarships after grades from the previous term have been verified.

Q. If I decide not to go to WCC this year, can I save the scholarship for the following year?
A. No, scholarships are awarded for one semester. Any unused funds at the end of the semester remain with the Foundation.

Q. Are there any other requirements to receive scholarship funds?
A. Scholarship recipients must write a thank you note and bring it to the WCC Foundation office by the specified deadline.may be required to attend Foundation functions, speak to groups about the value of the scholarship, and participate in College and Foundation marketing efforts. Recipients will be notified in advance.

In addition, recipients must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, unless a specific scholarship requires more. If a student falls below this GPA, the student will not be eligible to reapply for future semesters.
