Wallace sweeps Faulkner University2007-03-20
Wallace College baseball coach Mackey Sasser described Tuesday’s games against Faulkner University in one sentence.
news picture“The best thing about today is we got a pair of wins.

The Govs got off to a slow start, but eventually the bats got going. Wallace easily won the first game 10-0, and while the second was more competitive, the Govs still came away with 4-1 victory.

But Sasser saw what everyone else saw—including the players.

“We played with no emotion and no intensity, he said. “We can’t do that this coming weekend or we’ll get beat.

The games against Faulkner were what is typically known as a ‘trap’ game. It was a non-conference game before a big conference series. This weekend, the Govs will travel to Wadley to take on Southern Union. The winner of that series will likely be in first place in the Southern Division.

“We tell our guys all the time not to look ahead, Sasser said. “But it was really hard not to. We all know what is at stake.

As for Tuesday’s first game, it took a while for the Govs to get rolling, but once they did, it only took a few innings to 10-run yet another team. The Govs didn’t score in the first three innings. But once they broke the ice, they scored in three consecutive innings.

Wallace scored one run in the fourth without a hit. After Ernesto Gonzales reached on an error and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Michael Precise.

Three runs scored in the fifth. Anthony Kopacz hit a two-run double, while Cody Shields added an RBI double to give Wallace a 4-0 lead.

The game ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Govs scored six runs. Ryan Reece had an RBI double, Harmon Watkins hit a two-RBI double, Brett Chamberlain hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly, and Precise ended the game with a two-RBI double down the left field line.

The Govs used four pitchers in the contest, in order to get several pitchers some work. The win was credited to Joseph Braswell.

The same thing happened in the second game. Wallace used four pitchers and Andrew Hockenbury got the victory.

The Govs scored in the second inning when Chamberlain singled to knock in Harmon Watkins.

In the second inning, Tito Gonzales singled in both runs, while in the fourth Giovanni Ortiz knocked in the final run in the fourth inning.

Perhaps the most significant story of the day was the end of Chamberlain’s hitting streak. He went 0-for-3 in the first game with an RBI, ending his 12 game hitting streak But in the second game, Chamberlain promptly went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

The Govs are now 18-11 overall. They return to conference play at 3 p.m. Friday in Wadley against Southern Union.
