| Wallace pounds Southern Union in conference opener | 2007-03-23 |
| WADLEY--Round one of the much anticipated match-up between the Wallace Govs and the Southern Union Bison was a lopsided affair. Wallace delivered the knockout blow to the Bison and easily won the game 11-1. | |
| Once again the high scoring Gov offense ended a game early due to the 10-run rule. This scheduled nine-inning contest ended in the eighth. And unlike some of the earlier opponents, Southern Union is believed to be among the better teams in the Southern Division. Wallace pitcher Dave Mason tossed a complete game to get the win. Mason allowed only three hits and struck out seven. Offensively, Michael Precise was 2-for-5 with his team-leading eighth home run. Ernesto Gonzales was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. Ryan Reece was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Harman Watkins was 2-for-5. Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said the Govs played well in all phases of the game. He also said Gonzales made a “major league type play early in the contest and that set the stage for the rest of the game. Wallace is now 11-2 in the conference, 19-11 overall. The series will conclude Saturday afternoon with a double header beginning at 1 p.m. | |
