| How "SWEEP" it is! Wallace takes three from EOCC | 2007-04-07 |
| It followed the same script as the previous day. The Enterprise-Ozark Boll Weevils jumped out to a huge lead, only to see the Wallace Govs come back and win the game. This time the lead was even bigger than the previous day. Enterprise jumped out to a seven run lead before the Govs made a move. The Govs scored nine unanswered runs to win the first game 9-7. | |
The Govs also fell behind in game two, but not by nearly as much as the first two games. Wallace trailed 1-0 before rallying to win 13-2.The two-game sweep on Saturday means the Govs swept the conference series against one of their arch rivals. It also marked the second consecutive conference sweep for the Govs. Wallace—now 18-3 in the Southern Division, 26-12 overall—has yet to drop a conference series. “We played real sloppy baseball today, Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said. “Our guys played too laid back. They don’t realize they’ve got to come to the ball park ready to play from the first pitch every day. But the bottom line is, we got two wins today. Saturday’s first game had lots of similarities to Friday’s contest. Once again the Weevils were able to get to the Wallace starting pitcher—this time Cody Shields. But once again the Govs got outstanding work from the bullpen. Will Scott came on in the fourth inning to get the win. Ernesto Gonzales pitched the final two innings to earn the save. Enterprise jumped on top with one run in the first inning, three more in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth. At the same time, EOCC starting pitcher Blake Cole had shut the Govs out, allowing only one hit. But in the sixth inning, the Govs finally got rolling. Dennis Perez singled, Ryan Reece doubled, and both came in to score on Shields two-RBI single. In the seventh, the Govs tied the game when they scored five runs. The Govs got a two-RBI single from Shields, RBI singles from Gonzales, and Andrew Starr, and Gonzales scored on a wild pitch. The Govs won the game in the seventh inning. After Perez singled and Reece walked, Shields got his third hit of the game. This time it was a two-RBI single to center field. Shields was 3-for-5 in the game with four RBIs. Despite his team’s loss, Kyle Olasyn was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs for the Boll Weevils. Blake Gilley took the loss. Olasyn put the Weevils on top in the first inning of game two. He reached base on a bunt single and later scored on a passed ball. But in the fourth inning, the Govs finally dented the scoreboard for four runs. Harman Watkins (4-for-4, 2 RBIs) singled to knock in the first run. Michael Precise (4-for-5, 3 RBIs) knocked in another. The other runs scored on an error and a wild pitch. After the Boll Weevils got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, the game remained close until the eighth inning. That’s when the Govs had another one of those explosive innings. As they did yesterday, the Govs sent 15 batters to the plate. This time they scored nine runs to put the game out of reach. The rally was sparked by a three-run homer from Perez. In the eighth inning alone, Perez had a homer and a single, Brett Chamberlain had two singles and an RBI, and Watkins had a single, a walk and an RBI. Mitchell Davidson pitched six innings to earn the win. Casey Garner took the loss for the Boll Weevils. In the two games Saturday, the Govs had a total of 29 hits. Starr continued his hitting streak, which is now up to 18 games. For the weekend, the Govs scored a total of 38 runs The Govs will step out of conference play Wednesday when they travel to Cuthberth, GA to take on Andrew College. GAME NOTES • If you are wondering how hot the Govs bats have been lately, Wallace pounded out 45 hits in the three game series against the Boll Weevils. The Govs got home runs from Michael Precise, Andrew Starr, and Dennis Perez. • The seven-run deficit is the largest the Govs have come from behind to win a game this year. The Govs were so lifeless before the rally, Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said he had considered putting pitchers in to hit. • Twice in two days the Govs sent 15 batters to the plate in a single inning. The Govs scored 10 runs in the seventh on Friday and nine runs in the eighth inning of Saturday’s second game. • Andrew Starr continues his hot hitting. Starr now has an 18-game hitting streak. • In the three-game sweep of Enterprise-Ozark, only one of the Govs starting pitchers got the victory. Mitchell Davidson pitched six innings to get the win in the second game. • This series featured the most players from two teams that knew each other well. Several players from both teams played their high school ball at Northview, Dothan, and schools in the Florida Panhandle. Numerous players on both sides had played American Legion ball for either Post 12 or the Wiregrass Cardinals.
