Govs toss no-hitter; split with Darton2007-04-16
It was supposed to be just a couple of games for everyone to get some work in in-between conference games. But the first game of the Wallace Govs double header against Darton College turned out to be a little more than that.
news pictureThree Wallace pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter, and the Govs were able to shut out the Cavaliers 2-0.

While history was made in the first game, the Govs were unable to keep the momentum going in game two. Wallace dropped that game 2-1.

Dave Mason, Will Scott, and Ernesto Gonzales combined for the no-hitter. Mason, who got the win, struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Gonzales, who pitched the final two innings to earn the save, struck out one.

For the Govs, it was the first no-hitter in five years. The last one was thrown by Brandon Nall.

“Our pitching was simply outstanding today, Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said. “I am proud of these guys for being a part of school history. But what was really disappointing is we didn’t hit the ball well today. I had given the guys a few days off to get ready for the stretch run, and it showed. Hopefully we can’t get things together before we get back to our conference schedule this weekend.

The hot hitting Govs only managed seven hits themselves. Cody Shields, Gonzales, and Andrew Starr had two hits each, while Dennis Perez had the other one.

The Govs were able to punch across their first run in the bottom of the second inning. After Gonzales and Starr both reached base on singles, Brett Chamberlain grounded into a double play for the first run.

Then in the bottom of the second, Gonzalez got an infield single that scored Jon Eaves, who had walked.

Hitting for the Govs was even more abysmal in game two. Wallace only managed four hits in that game.

Darton scored the game’s first run in the top of the fourth inning. Gov pitcher David Travis gave up three hits in the inning. The third was an RBI single by Gustava Bonilla.

The Govs tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Brett Chamberlain (2-for-3) led off the inning with a single to right field. Three batters later, he scored on an RBI single to center field off the bat of Harman Watkins.

But in the sixth inning, the Cavaliers took the lead off eventual losing pitcher Brett Birdsong. In his second inning of relief work, Birdsong gave up back-to-back doubles to Jake Summers and an RBI double to Seth Farmer.

The Govs were able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. The tying run was at second base when the game to end on a routine ground out.

Wallace is now 28-13 on the season. The Govs will travel to Albany Wednesday for another double header against Darton. Wallace returns to conference play Friday when they host Central Alabama at 1 p.m.
