Wallace signs first player for the 2009 season2008-02-02
The Wallace College Governors have landed their first signee for the 2009 baseball season. He is J. Ryan Rennspies of Tate High School in Pensacola.
news picture “This just seems like a good place for me to be," Rennspies said of coming to Wallace. “It also seems like a fun place to go to school."

Rennspies, a catcher, didn’t have to rely on just his own opinion. He had a little help. His older brother Dustin was also a catcher at Wallace. He was later drafted by the Los Angeles Dodger organization and later coached at the junior college level.

“Dustin’s advice did help," Ryan said. “He told me about his experience here and it was real easy to follow his lead."

Throughout his high school career, Rennspies has compiled a batting average of .376. He averages about two home runs per season. But what he is really known for is his defensive skills. His throws down to second base are around 1.9 seconds.

“I have a strong arm," he said, “and I am pretty quick behind the plate. And since Coach (Mackey) Sasser was a catcher, I think he will really be able to help me improve my skills."

“Ryan is a really good catcher," Sasser said. “We are very fortunate to get him. I think he will be able to come in and work on his weaknesses and improve on his strengths."

Sasser is also proud of the pipeline he has established with numerous former players.

“I don’t think you can get a better recommendation for your program than from a former player," Sasser said. “When your brother says this is where you want to play, that’s saying a lot. No one would tell their brother to come here unless they though it was a good place to be."

Sasser said the recruiting season is just getting started for the Govs. Most of it he says won’t take place until the summer. In the meantime, the Govs will kick off the 2008 at home on Saturday February 2 against Abraham-Baldwin.
