| Govs fall to Okaloosa-Walton in slugfest | 2008-03-06 |
| FT. WALTON--The final score was like that of a slow-pitch softball game, and Wallace coach Mackey Sasser was not happy at all. Sasser said he was disappointed in the way his local guys performed. Despite his Wallace Govs building numerous leads against Okaloosa-Walton here Thursday afternoon, the pitching staff could not hold the leads. The Govs ended up losing the contest 16-15. | |
| "Our sluggers continue to hit the ball," Sasser said. "But the pitching staff has got to step it up. They're giving up runs right and left. Most of these guys are local guys. Most of these guys are local guys. they want more playing time, and I'll be happy to give it to them. But we've got to be able to count on them when they are handed the ball." The Govs built a three-run lead in the first inning, but in the bottom of the inning Dothan's Joseph Braswell gave up six runs and then two more in the bottom of the second. Hunter Green of Dothan and Adam Oliver of Tallahassee were able to hold O-W in check for 4 2/3 innings. And Skipperville's Sloan Simmons had one good inning. But in the bottom of the ninth, with Wallace leading by five, Simmons gave up five runs that allowed O-W to tie the game. Daniel Vargasvilla gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. On the bright side, Daniel Torrente was three-for-five with two home runs, a double, and seven RBIs. Esterlin Perozo was two-for-five with a two-run homer. Brett Chamberlain was three-for-five. The loss drops the Govs to 9-6 on the season. The Govs return to conference action Saturday at noon when they host Wallace-Selma in a double header at Westgate Park. | |
