Govs complete sweep of Wallace-Selma2008-03-12
It was the same song just a difference verse. For the third time this year the Wallace Govs blasted the Wallace-Selma Patriots. And just like the previous two games, this one wasn’t close either.
news pictureThis time the Govs used an eight-run second inning to break the game open. And once again the game ended early due to the 10-run rule. The Govs won 12-2 Wednesday afternoon, completing a conference series sweep of the Patriots.

The win went to Dothan’s Hunter Green who pitched six innings, gave up six hits, one earned run, and walked two. Adam Oliver pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

“The best thing about this series is we won,” said Wallace coach Mackey Sasser. “There are certain teams you should beat. We went out and took care of business. The remainder of our conference games won’t be this easy.”

With the win, the Govs improved to 7-2 in the Southern Division, 12-8 overall. The Govs return to conference play this weekend in Mobile when they play Bishop State.

In all of the games, the Patriots found themselves in a huge hole early. In the first inning, the Govs only scored only one run. That came on a lead-off single by Harman Watkins, and an RBI single by Daniel Torrente.

Then came that magical second inning. The Govs sent 13 batters to the plate and chased starting pitcher Brad Self from the game. The Govs got five hits in the inning, but the Patriots committed three big errors and walked two other batters. Among the big hits in the inning, Watkins, T.J. Rivera, and Ryan Reece all had two-RBI singles, and Brett Chamberlain had an RBI double. The eighth run scored on an error. After two innings, the Govs had a 9-0 lead.

Green gave up single runs in the third and fourth inning, the only runs the Patriots scored. But the Govs didn’t stop scoring themselves. In the bottom of the third, the Watkins hit a solo home run, his third of the year.

The final two runs of the game scored in the fifth. Rivera led off the inning with a single to right field and later scored on a wild pitch. Esterlin Perozo walked, and later scored on an RBI ground out by Chamberlain.

“We didn’t play with a lot of intensity today,” Sasser said. “But the important thing is we got the win. I don’t want our guys to get too relaxed because every day is not going to be like today.”

Friday’s single game at Bishop State will get underway at 1 p.m., with a scheduled double-header set for Saturday at noon.
