| Vanderwall signs with Wallace | 2008-03-21 |
| Zigmond Vanderwall has decided it’s time to move south to continue his baseball career. So after he graduates high school in Rockford , Illinois, he’s going to be playing baseball for the Wallace College Governors. | |
“I really like it down here,” Vanderwall said recently during an official visit to Dothan. “It was snowing when I left Illinois. So I’m excited and happy about coming here. We don’t get to play baseball all year long where I’m from.”Coincidentally, it was near 70 degrees and sunny when he was in Dothan. And his route to Dothan began with another trip south last summer. “Coach (Mackey) Sasser and Coach (Pete) Coachman saw me playing in a tournament in Jupiter Florida,” Vanderwall said. “I was a member of a traveling baseball team.” What attracted the Wallace coaches to Vanderwall was the way he hit the ball. The 6’, 175 pound outfielder can really hit the ball. He bat lead-off and hit .441 during his junior year in high school. He bats left and throws left, and may also see some action on the mound for the Govs. He also struck out 40 batters and had an earned run average of 3.76. “Z.J. is really going to be an asset to the team,” Sasser said. “He’s got good speed and he swings the bat well. “ “I think one of my biggest assets is I like to talk,” Vanderwall said. “I will walk around and talk to all the guys. I do my best to keep them motivated.” | |
