Wallace wins ugly game against EOCC2008-04-04
Forty runs, 37 hits, 13 pitchers, 14 walks, seven hit batters, seven errors, and 3 ˝ hours later, mercifully it was over. The best way to describe the Wallace and Enterprise-Ozark baseball game Friday afternoon is UGLY. And to top it off, just as the game was coming to an end, the skies opened up and a downpour hit.
news pictureThe good news for the Wallace Govs in this uglyfest is they won the game. The Govs needed six pitchers and all nine innings to hold on for a 24-16 victory.

“We can hit with anybody in the country,” Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said after the contest. “But on the mound, we stink. We can’t get anybody out. “

Actually starting pitching wasn’t that bad for the Govs. Adam Oliver, who got win, pitched six innings. He did give up five runs, but thanks to three errors before he left the game, only three of those runs were earned. All three earned runs came off the bat of former Ashford player Brooks Glover who connected for a three-run homer in the top of third inning. That gave the Boll Weevils a 4-0 lead.

But it was a short-lived lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Govs struck for seven runs of their own—and all seven runs scored without the benefit of a home run. The Govs did get six hits in the inning, and they were helped by a hit batter and a base on balls off losing pitcher William Gunnett. The Govs got a two-RBI double from Harmon Watkins, a two-RBI single from Rafael Carlot, RBI singles from Ryan Reece and Chris Sasser, and an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Brett Chamberlain.

All of that was just the beginning of the madness. Enterprise came up with three runs in the top half of the fourth inning to tie the game at 7-7. But the Govs got a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Those runs came on a solo home run by Esterlin Perozo and an RBI single by Ryan Reece. The Govs had a 9-7 lead after four innings.

The game seemed well at hand when the Govs added three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. But when Oliver went out of the game, the Boll Weevils found new life. Sloan Simmons came on and faced three batters and gave up three hits and didn’t get a single out. Andrew Hockenbury faced four batters, gave up two hits, a walk, a hit batter, and didn’t get a single out. Daniel Vargasvilla came in and immediately gave up a two-RBI single before getting the three outs. By the time the inning was over, the Boll Weevils had scored six runs and once again pulled with two, 15-13.

The Govs got three of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, but gave all three back in the top of the eighth. Wallace was finally able to seize the momentum for good in the bottom of the eighth when they added their final six runs of the game.

The Govs hit five home runs in the game. In addition to Perozo, two of them came off the bat of Jonathan Eaves, who went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Rafael Carlot had a solo home run, and Chris Sasser hit his first home run of the year.

The Govs are now 16-3 in the Southern Division, 18-9 overall. Saturday’s scheduled double-header has already been postponed due to expected inclement weather. The games are now set to get underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday on the Wallace campus.

GAME NOTES

The Govs have hit home runs in all but three of their games this year, and until Friday every member of the starting lineup had hit at least one homer—except one. Now that has change. Chris Sasser became the last Govs to hit a home run this year when he connected for two-run blast over the left field fence in the seventh inning.

Every member of the Govs lineup got at least one hit Friday afternoon. The line-up went this way:

Harman Watkins went 2-for-5 with a double, two walks and two RBIs.
T.J. Rivera was 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, and an RBI.
Esterlin Perozo was 4-for-6 with a home run, double, walk, and two RBIs.
Daniel Torrente was 2-for-4 with a walk, hit by pitch, and an RBI.
Brett Chamberlain was 1-for-3 with two sacrifice flies, hit by pitch and four RBIs.
Ryan Reece was 2-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs.
Jonathan Eaves was 2-for-4 with two home runs, two walks and four RBIs.
Rafael Carlot was 2-for-5 with a home run, sacrifice, and three RBIs.
Chris Sasser was 2-for-4 with a home run, hit by pitch, and three RBIs.
