Govs defeat Andrew College2008-04-15
It was a midweek game after a week off. And Coach Mackey Sasser and the Wallace Govs treated it that way. In order to get his troops ready for the return of conference play, Sasser employed a pitcher for every inning for his team’s contest against the Andrew College Tigers Tuesday afternoon.
news pictureThe nine pitcher performance worked. As a group, the Govs only gave up six hits, as Wallace rolled to a 10-6 victory. With the win, the Govs improved to 27-10 on the season.

“Our guys were a little rusty with the long layoff,” Sasser said. “We didn’t have any conference games last weekend so I gave them a few days off so they could be ready for the stretch run. Our hands were a little slow today, but overall we looked pretty good.”

About the only complaint Sasser had was the number of walks his pitchers had. Although they surrendered only six hits, they also gave up seven walks. Five of those walked were given up by Andrew Hockenbury in the third inning. That allowed the Tigers to score four runs, two of which were scored on bases loaded walks. That briefly gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead before the Govs bats got hot.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers ran into pitching problems of their own and the Govs took advantage. First, Tiger starting pitcher Jimmy Lamourt gave up a pair of doubles, including an RBI double by T.J. Rivera. Then he proceeded to hit the next three batters. Brett Chamberlain was the third batter hit and that forced in the second run of the game. The Govs cut the lead to 4-3 when Ryan Reece hit a sacrifice fly.

The Govs tied the game in the fourth inning when Harman Watkins hit his second triple of the game and later scored on an error.

It wasn’t until the sixth inning that Wallace took the lead and held it until the end. After back-to-back singles by Jonathan Eaves and Rafael Carlot, back-to-back RBI ground outs by Chris Sasser and Watkins plated two runs. Rivera and Esterlin Perozo followed with singles, and both were brought home on an RBI double by Daniel Torrente. Wallace now led 8-4.

Sloan Simmons was the benefactor of those runs and was credited with the win. Jeremy Gazerro, the third pitcher used by Andrew College, gave up all four runs and took the loss.

The Govs have three final conference series remaining. The first one is this weekend against Central Alabama at Alexander City. Friday’s single game gets underway at 4 p.m. and Saturday’s double header gets underway at 1 p.m.
