Wallace baseball coach Mackey Sasser knew exactly where to look when he wanted to sign players for his 2010 team. He crossed the state line and plucked a couple of players from Panama City. Then to complete the early signing, he went north to Prattville.“Over the years we’ve had a bunch of good players from Panama City,” Sasser said. “They’ve come here and had productive careers and then gone on to four year schools to complete their baseball careers and education. I think it speaks to the caliber of baseball that is played in the Florida Panhandle.” On Thursday afternoon, Sasser signed Adam Abrams and Nick Hartzog, both from Mosely High School. He also added Matthew Perrigan of Autauga Academy in Prattville. All three will play on the infield. “We won’t sign a bunch of players this year,” Sasser said, “because we’ve got a young team. This year’s team is made up mostly of freshmen. We are just looking for a few good players who can fit into our program and come in here and play early.” A first baseman, Abrams will bring at least two qualities to the team. First, he is a very good defensive player. He’s only made three errors in the past two years. And although he is determined, there is also a less than serious side. “I am a very funny guy,” he said. “I will definitely lighten up the mood on the team.” Hartzog, his teammate, plays right beside him on the infield. He is a speedy second baseman with a good bat. “I came to Wallace because I had some friends on the team,” Hartzog said. “I have heard nothing but good things about Wallace and I wanted to be a part of it.” At third base, Perrigin brings a big bat to the team. He batted .411 as a sophomore and .389 as a junior. “I wanted to play for a winning program,” Hartzog said. “I want to come in here and play and continue that winning tradition.” Sasser said he will sign a few more pitchers and he is looking to sign a catcher. After that, he said he will pretty much be finished. Wallace opens this year’s season on January 31. Nate Frazier is Sports Information Director for Wallace Community College baseball.
