| Wallace falls to Gulf Coast | 2009-02-25 |
| It is much easier to state what the Wallace Govs didn’t do rather than what they did. Against the Gulf Coast Commodores Tuesday afternoon, the Govs didn’t hit the baseball. It took the Govs until the seventh inning to get their first hit. | |
Gulf Coast pitcher Andrew Morris befuddled the Govs all game long. In the end, he showed why the Commodores are ranked number one in Florida. He gave up only three hits in the nine-inning contest, and Gulf Coast easily won 7-1.Morris was in total command as he pitched the entire game. He struck out 15 in the contest. He struck out every member of the Wallace lineup—some two or three times. “They have a good team,” Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said of the Commodores. “I don’t want to take anything away from them. But I do have a problem with our guys. We play with no intensity. We have no drive. I know our guys are young, but they still act like they are in high school. “ “The bottom line is this,” Sasser continued. “We play like we’re scared. We have no heart. And when you have no heart, you don’t have anything.” Morris got all the support he needed when his teammates chased Wallace starting and losing pitcher Brandon Swann from the game—in the second inning. Swann gave up a double to Michael Holmes, an RBI double to Will Howard, an RBI single to Ryan Faisan, a single to Whitt Dorsey, and an RBI single to Jeremy Boyte. That was the last batter Swann faced. The three runs were all the Commodores needed, but they also added single runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth innings. The Govs only run came in the eighth inning. Zigmond Vanderwall walked and later scored on an RBI single by T.J. Rivera. “The one thing our guys have got to learn is they have to show up to play all the time,” Sasser said. They can’t take a day off, an inning off, or even an at-bat off. They have to be ready to play all the time. That’s the difference at this level.” Wallace is now 7-6 on the season. The Govs will host Abraham-Baldwin Sunday afternoon at noon on the campus of Wallace College. Nathaniel Frazier is Sports Information Director for Wallace baseball.
