| Wallace falls to Central | 2009-04-17 |
| Round one goes to Central. | |
But when the Trojans scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, it was over. Central went on to win the first of three games 7-2. “We didn’t hit the ball when we had our chances,” Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said. “We’ve got to be more consistent. It’s been that way all year.” The Govs only had six hits for the entire game. By contrast, the Trojans had 16. But perhaps one reason the Govs didn’t hit the ball was Central starting pitcher Wes Cook. In picking up the win, Cook is now 8-0 on the year. He entered the game with an earned run average of 2.51. Brett Birdsong, normally a relief pitcher for the Govs, got the start and took the loss. He pitched eight innings, his longest outing of the year. Wallace briefly had the lead in this contest. A solo home run off the bat of Yeriel Nieves in the third inning gave the Govs a 1-0 lead. That disappeared in the top of the next inning when Shane Lewis perfectly executed the safety squeeze to plate Rhett Barnes. Central took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Parker’s RBI single plated Dothan native Brennan Olive, who played baseball last year at Houston Academy. Olive went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, single, walk, and hit-by-pitch. The Trojans added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Wallace was able to get a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by T.J. Rivera. That cut the Central lead to 4-2. But unfortunately that was it for Wallace. Central put the game away in the ninth. Their final three runs scored on three doubles and a single. Wallace is now 11-5-1 in the conference. A game against Enterprise-Ozark has yet to be completed. Central is now in the lead with a record of 11-4. The two teams wrap up their conference series today with a double header beginning at noon Saturday on the Wallace campus.
