Govs swept by Central2009-04-18
After the Central Alabama Trojans delivered a body blow on Friday afternoon, they came out ready to deliver the knockout punch Saturday afternoon. In the first game of a double header, the knock down punch was delivered when the Trojans soundly whipped the Govs 10-4. The knock-out punch was delivered in game two when the Trojans completed a three-game conference sweep of the Govs by winning 5-3.
news picture“The last thing you want to do late in the season is to get swept at home,” Wallace coach Mackey Sasser said. “You have to take care of business at home. But nothing we seem to do is working right now. We fall behind early and the guys are under pressure the rest of the game to catch up. We’ve got to score some early runs to take the pressure off.”

From the get-go, that didn’t happen. Starting and losing pitcher Adam Oliver had his second straight bad outing. Once again he didn’t make it out of the second inning. Before he departed, he gave up five runs, which included a two-run homer in the first inning to Rhett Barnes. In the second, Oliver also surrendered an RBI single to Justin Jones and another two run homer to Logan Ramage in. He also gave up three walks, a double, and two wild pitches in those two innings.

All total, the Trojans hit four home runs in the first game alone. By winning the series, the Trojans are now in sole possession of first place in the Southern Division.

There were a few bright spots for the Govs, but it didn’t come close to making up the difference in the game. The Govs out hit the Trojans 13 to 11, but until the ninth inning, the Govs couldn’t score more than a single run in an inning. And for the second consecutive game, Yeriel Nieves hit a home run. Nieves was 3-for-5 in the game. The only other batters with multiple hits were Daniel Fuller who went 3-for-5 with two doubles, and Loenardo Larmarche who had two singles.
While the second game was more competitive, the result was the same. Once again Wallace fell behind. Starting pitcher Tyler Claburn pitched well but the Govs still trailed 3-0 after the third inning. The Govs got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Ryan Rennspies and an RBI ground out from Chris Sasser. The score remained 3-2 until the seventh inning.

That’s when relief pitcher Daniel Vargasvila gave up two runs on three hits and a huge Wallace error. Those two runs turned out to be big. The Govs scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but when the game ended, the Govs had the bases loaded.

“We don’t have a whole lot of things we can do differently right now,” Sasser said. “When you’ve got guys in a slump, sometimes you’d like to sit them down so they can get straightened out. But with all of the injuries we’ve had, we’ve only got two guys on our bench. Our starting pitchers don’t go deep into the game, so that puts pressure on the pitching staff. We get back into the game, and we walk guys and commit errors. Right now for us it’s like being in a foxhole. Every time we stick our heads up, we get bombed.”

The sweep means Central is now in sole possession of first place in the conference with a record of 13-4. Wallace is now 11-7-1 in the Southern Division, 28-17- overall. The Govs will complete a suspended game at Enterprise-Ozark on Tuesday, and will play at Chattahoochee Valley next weekend.
