Coach Dews was born on Sept. 29, 1951.  He grew up in Ft. Gaines, Georgia, where, in high school, he played baseball, basketball, tennis, and ran track.  In baseball, he was All-State three years playing short stop.  His team won the state Championship his senior year.  In track, Coach Dews was the first to break the ten- second 100-yard dash with a time of 9.92 seconds.

After high school, Dews attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus where he played baseball, and ran track and cross country.  He received his BS Degree in 1974 and his M.Ed. in 1975.  That year he coached track at Randolph County High School.

In 1976, Coach Dews moved to Milledgeville, GA, where he became Head Coach of the Georgia Military College.  In his four years there, he posted records of 22-4, 23-2, 25-3, 22-4 (92-13)

To continue his education, Dews moved to Troy St. University in 1980.  While working on his Education Specialist Degree, which he received in 1980, he served as a Graduate Assistant for baseball under the legendary Coach Chase Riddle.  That 1980 team came in fifth in the Division II College World Series in Riverside, CA.

Nineteen Eighty-four saw Coach Dews back in Georgia as an Assistant Baseball Coach at Gordon Jr. College in Barnsville, where he worked with former Braves player Hank Small.  While at Gordon, the team won three North Georgia Championships, and Coach Dews was a Nationally Ranked Recruiting Coordinator.

For the next four seasons, 1984-1988, as Head Coach, Dews rebuilt the baseball program at Brewton Parker Junior College in Mt. Vernon, Georgia.  His teams posted seasons of 26-15, 38-6, 44-5, and 42-9 (150-35).

In January, 1988, Dews moved back to Troy St. University as full-time Assistant Coach, where he stayed until the Summer of 1990.  In these years, he was instrumental in taking the Trojans to both Regional and National Championships.
