DRAFTING AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY (DDT)
(Wallace and Sparks Campuses, Easterling Correctional Facility)

Program Description: The Design Drafting Technology program prepares students for employment as entry level drafters. The program is  Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD). Students will receive training in fundamentals of CAD drafting with introductory courses in the fields of mechanical and architectural drafting.

Career Opportunities: A student completing the degree requirements will be able to find employment with  engineers, various government subcontractors, machine shops, architects, electrical engineers, structural engineers, civil engineers, and home builders. 

Skills Needed: Students will learn many technical skills required in the area of drafting and design. Among the technical skills learned through each course you take, you can also look forward to obtaining the following skills:

  • Ability to use AutoCAD® software to create design plans for residential or commercial products
  • Ability to read and create blueprints
  • Ability to communicate technical information to a variety of people and scenarios

Expected Earnings/Salary: Earnings for DDT graduates as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook are as follows:

  • Drafters' earnings vary by specialty, location, and level of responsibility.
  • Median annual wages of architectural and civil drafters were $44,490.
  • The middle 50 percent earned between $35,290 and $55,740.
  • The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,220, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $67,110.
  • Median annual wages for architectural and civil drafters in architectural, engineering, and related services were $44,390.
