UPHOLSTERY (UPH)
(Wallace Campus)
SHORT CERTIFICATE
Furniture and automobile upholsterers are skilled craftspersons who cover furniture, automobile seats, and other surfaces with padding and finishing fabric. They may replace worn fabric, repair broken frames, and replace and/or repair bent springs, webbing, and other worn parts of furniture. In addition, they assist customers in selecting materials and colors. Upholsterers must have good manual and finger dexterity, mechanical inclination, and good eyesight and color vision. A flair for creative work is also helpful.
Students learn orientation and safety, upholstery equipment and tools, webbing and spring foundation, burlap foundation, muslin cover, and final fabrics. Channeling, making tufts and skirts, trimming, dismantling, repairing, and remodeling are covered along with specialization techniques for autos. Students must be able to do simple arithmetic because of calculations involved in laying out and planning the work. Students must purchase their own books and tools.
Students completing all courses listed in the curriculum will be awarded a certificate. Admission is conditional and depends on the student's ability to perform the essential functions identified for this program. Reasonable accommodations are considered. A high school diploma or GED is not required; however, students are required to have specifically documented ability to benefit. (See page 20, Admission to Courses Not Creditable Toward an Associate Degree.) Reasonable accommodations are considered. |
