Biology Student Learning Outcomes


Bio 103  

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
  • Apply the scientific method.
  • Relate the basic principles of biochemistry to living organisms.
  • Identify the fundamental biology of the cell.
  • Demonstrate the fundamental principles of Mendelian genetics.
  • Interpret the molecular basis for heredity.
  • Demonstrate proper use of the standard tools of the biological scientist using metric measurements.

  • Explain the ecological relationship between organisms and their environment.
  • Identify the role of abiotic factors within the environment.
  • Relate the contributions of plants to the ecosystem.
  • Relate a comprehensive knowledge of the diversity of invertebrates.

Bio 201   

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
  • Describe an overview of anatomy and physiology, the core principles in anatomy and physiology, basic histology as well as basic cellular, molecular and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems and explain the basic function of those tissues and organs that relate to the integumentary system.
  • Describe the basic cellular, molecular and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems and explain the basic function of those tissues and organs that relate to the skeletal system and joints.
  • Describe the basic cellular, molecular and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems and explain the basic function of those tissues and organs that relate to the muscular system.
  • Describe the basic cellular, molecular and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems and explain the basic function of those tissues and organs that relate to the nervous system.
  • Describe the basic cellular, molecular and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems and explain the basic function of those tissues and organs that relate to the autonomic nervous system and the special senses.
  • Identify and recall fundamental structures from anatomical models and slides using correct nomenclature in laboratory exams.

Bio 202 

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
  • Describe the basic cellular, molecular and gross anatomy of tissue, organs and organ systems that relate to the endocrine, respiratory, digestive, excretory, cardiovascular, lymphatic and reproductive body systems.
  • Explain the basic function of tissues and organs as they relate to the function of human organ systems in class discussion and lecture exams.
  • List and apply a fundamental language in anatomy and physiology in lecture and laboratory exams and exercises.
  • Identify and recall fundamental structures from anatomical models using correct nomenclature in laboratory exams.
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of the microscopes in laboratory exercises.
 

Bio 220 

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
  • Compare and contrast the characteristics for various microbes with regards to infections, treatment, and control. (This includes bacteria, prions, protozoans, multicellular parasites and viruses.)
  • Explain the dynamics of commensal, opportunistic, and pathological relationships particularly between microbes and humans.
  • Evaluate and apply the proper methods of microbial control necessary in sample scenarios or case studies.
  • Describe microbial metabolic pathways in general terms and specifically evaluate the implications for food production and human disease.
  • Summarize basic bacterial genetic principles and analyze consequences of mutation and genetic recombination.
  • Articulate and diagram the role of the immune system in maintaining homeostasis, challenging infections, and fighting cancer.
  • Apply the scientific method by stating a question; researching the topic; determining appropriate tests; performing tests; collecting, analyzing, and presenting data; and finally proposing new questions about the topic.
  • Correctly perform microbiologic lab skills and display a habit of good lab practices which extends to relevant situations in the student’s homes.
  • Retrieve, evaluate, and use contemporary microbiologic information.
