SUPERSTAR #1
Don Dykes lives in Louisville, Alabama and was employed full time as a prison guard when he entered Wallace Community College during Summer Semester of 1995.  He joined Student Support Services in January of 1996.  He received tutoring from Student Support Services Math Instructor Kathy Lawhorn .  He was under a lot of stress trying to work full time during the day and attending classes at night.  It soon became apparent that he could not keep up such a hectic pace.  He quit his job and decided to go to school full time during the day.  Don worked hard to get into the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) program.  Math was a difficult subject for him and he attended tutoring sessions on a regular basis.  There were several times when he was ready to give up but his determination was strong.  Don graduated from the PTA program Summer Semester of 1999.  He now works as a Home Health Services therapist and was awarded the 1999 Rehab of the Year by the Home Health Services Board of Directors on March 15, 2000.  Don is also a member of the National Guard and was sent to Iraq. He returned in February 2005 after receiving non-life threatening injuries and will retire soon from his Guard Unit. Student Support Services is very proud of this Superstar!!

Erin Gilmore joined Student Support Services during Fall Semester of 1998.  Always an academic achiever, she couldn't believe it when she had to join Student Support Services to receive tutoring in math.  She soon realized that this was more than just a tutoring program and became involved in our cultural events and academic workshops.  Erin never missed an opportunity to praise Student Support Services, even to the point of writing an essay about the program.  Keeping a cumulative GPA of 4.0 throughout her entire enrollment at Wallace earned her the respect of her fellow students as well as her instructors and the staff of Student Support Services.  Erin was selected as a nominee for the All-Alabama Academic Team and made it.  She even made it to the All-USA Academic Second Team!  On Honor's Convocation Day, April 26, 2000 she was selected as Outstanding Math Student and won the James B. Allen Award.  She was president of Phi Theta Kappa and a Wallace College Diplomat.  Erin earned a scholarship to Montevallo, but chose to attend Troy State University in Troy.  She plans to transfer to UAB to pursue a master's and doctorate in nutrition.  Erin has received her Masters Degree and has decided to go on to medical school to become a doctor! Student Support Services is proud to have been a part of this Superstar's college experience. Erin has been accepted to Medical School at University of South Alabama. She will begin Fall Semester. She managed to keep a 4.0 GPA and stay on the President's List while taking classes, tutoring, and being a mom and a wife!!   Debra says she tutored because she loves people and she gets to give back to the college.  She knows what it feels like to be out of school for "20" years and then go back.  "I enjoy being an encourager to people who find themselves starting over" she says. After graduation Debra was employed by Wallace College. She works in Admissions. SUPERSTAR #7

Danny Kennedy joined Student Support Services in February of 2001 after completing his GED and enrolling in Wallace.  He participated in the GED graduation on April 1, 2001.  Danny had the third highest score in his graduating class and his score on the Social Sciences portion of the test ranked in the top 15% for the entire US.  Due to complications with his insulin dependent diabetes, Danny has been blind since 1995 so this is an even greater achievement for him than for most students.  He is majoring in counseling because it is "an opportunity to help other people".  He currently has As in three of his classes and a B in speech.  He uses a computer program that allows him to scan his textbooks into his computer which reads the material to him.  His advice for those who have a goal or a dream -- "For people who want to do it, get off your can and get started.  If you want it bad enough, you can do it.  Apply yourself and anything is possible."  Danny has certainly been a shining example of his own advice.  Way to go Superstar.  We salute you!!
