What is the Placement Exam?

The Placement Exam (ACCUPLACER) is used to assess college level skills in the areas of math, writing, and reading. The results of this computerized test, in conjunction with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine your math and English course selection. You cannot pass or fail the placement tests, but it is very important that you do your very best on these tests so that you will have an accurate measure of your academic skills. The test is untimed but on average, students take about 2-3 hours to complete the test. You will not need to make an appointment for testing. Check the dates on college website for scheduled testing dates.

ACCUPLACER is an adaptive test. This means questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Please be serious and committed to do your best. Plan to test when you will not be distracted or rushed.

What subjects are covered on the Placement Exam?
  • Reading Comprehension: The test contains 20 questions. Some ask you decide how two sentences are related. Questions are answered after reading passages of various lengths.

  • Writing: This test measures your ability to write effectively, which is critical to academic success. You will be required to write a 300-600 word essay on the computer. Your score will be based on your ability to express, organize, and support your opinions and ideas.

  • Math (Elementary Algebra, College Level Math): Students will take at least one math test, Elementary Algebra (12 questions).
