Lady Govs Prepare for State Softball Tournament

Dothan, Ala.The Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) Lady Govs are reaping the benefits of their hard work on the softball field and in the classroom. They will take the field at the ACCC State Tournament in Alabaster on May 3 at 2:00 pm sporting a 52-6 overall record and a 27-1 Conference record. The Lady Govs have won 25 games in a row. They are champions of the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) South Division.

Hard work has been a hallmark of this team, and they are poised to make a strong showing at this year’s state tournament after last year’s disappointing quick exit. WCCD Coach David Russo is excited about the intensity with which his team, ranked 4th nationally, is playing and is optimistic for the post season. “Our Lady Govs approach the game with a plan to win every moment. They are locked in on every pitch, every at bat, every inning, and every game, and this intense focus is what has propelled them to new heights within the ACCC and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).”

The team has accumulated impressive statistics throughout the season, and opposing teams have found it difficult to score. The Lady Govs lead the ACCC in fewest runs allowed. They also lead the NJCAA in earned run average with Bailee Dempsey leading the nation in individual earned run average. Mallie Brown is second in the nation in wins and Dempsey is third.

The enthusiasm among team members, coaches, and the Wallace Family is evident. “I love watching this team play,” said Coach Russo. “They play with such passion, vigor, and enthusiasm, and I look forward to the opportunities that await at this tournament.”

WCCD President Dr. Linda Young expressed her pride in the team as well. “Our Lady Govs truly represent what WCCD and the ACCC strive to promote in student-athletics. Our players are outstanding athletes having an exceptional season, but first and foremost, they are students. They make us all proud not only of their accomplishments on the field but also of their accomplishments in the classroom.”

After the ACCC Tournament concludes, the Lady Govs hope to be on their way to the NJCAA tournament in St. George, Utah, in late May. If they do make that trip, seven are currently on track to make it as WCCD graduates. Evin Bibb, Morgan Brooks, Mallie Brown, Emerald Coachman, Bailee Dempsey, Schylur Edwards, and Hannah Peters are completing final course requirements and plan to trade their uniforms, temporarily, for a cap and gown on May 9. Following their days as Lady Govs, two players, so far, plan to continue their collegiate softball careers. Schylur Edwards has signed with Alabama State University and Mallie Brown with University of South Carolina-Upstate.
