Sigma Kappa Delta

The National Website:

Description of SKD:

Sigma Kappa Delta is the National English Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges, a sister society of Sigma Tau Delta. According to the SKD Constitution, "The purposes of the Society shall be educational, literary, and charitable. The Society shall strive to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in two-year institutions of higher education; provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and to promote interest in literature and English language in the surrounding communities; foster the discipline of English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing; promote community among its members; and exhibit high standards of academic excellence."

Sigma Kappa Delta
was created April 21, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois. The organization was incorporated in 1996 in the state of Missouri as a not-for-profit educational entity. Its central purpose is to confer distinction upon outstanding students of English language and literature in undergraduate studies. Sigma Kappa Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the discipline. The name Sigma Kappa Delta comes from the Greek letters representing the first letter of each of the words that form the official motto, “Sincerity, Knowledge, and Design.”

The official colors of the Society are green and gold; the official plant is English Ivy. The official seal appears on all official documents of the Society. Through the work of chapters on the campuses of two-year institutions throughout the United States, Sigma Kappa Delta provides exceptional students opportunities for advancing the study of language and literature, for developing skills in creative and analytical writing, and for meeting other outstanding scholars and professionals in the discipline of English.
