Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR)

(Wallace Campus, Sparks Campus, and Ventress Correctional Facility)

Program Description:

This program provides training in which students gain the skills, knowledge, and experience for employment in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) occupations. Students will acquire techniques and skills necessary to install, maintain, repair, or replace HVAC/R equipment. Students will have the opportunity to learn various phases of the fundamental principles of controls and electrical systems associated with HVAC/R. Courses focus on residential and light commercial HVAC/R systems. The HVAC/R program is an Accredited Training and Education Facility (ATEF).

Career Opportunities:

Job prospects for heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers are expected to be excellent, particularly for those who have completed training from an accredited technical school or a formal apprenticeship. The growing number of retirements of highly skilled technicians is expected to generate many more job openings. Many contractors have reported problems finding enough workers to meet the demand for service and installation of HVACR systems.

Skills Needed:

Technicians may work outside in cold or hot weather, or in buildings that are uncomfortable because the air-conditioning or heating equipment is broken. In addition, technicians might work in awkward or cramped positions, and they are sometimes required to work in high places. Hazards include electrical shock, burns, muscle strains, and other injuries from handling heavy equipment. Appropriate safety equipment is necessary when handling refrigerants because contact can cause skin damage, frostbite, or blindness. When working in tight spaces, inhalation of refrigerant is a possible hazard.

Expected Earnings/Salary:

Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers
