ADN student Ceil Hovey
Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) is proud to recognize Ceil Hovey, a 71‑year‑old student in the College’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, whose determination to pursue a nursing career has drawn national attention.
Hovey was recently featured by Nurse.org, highlighting her return to the classroom to follow a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. Her story reflects the power of perseverance, purpose, and the impact of community college education.
Hovey, who previously graduated from WCCD’s Respiratory Therapist program 40 years ago and served in the healthcare field in that capacity, chose WCCD for its strong nursing program, supportive faculty, and hands-on clinical training. As one of the oldest students in the program, she meets the same academic and clinical expectations as her peers while inspiring those around her through her work ethic and commitment to patient care.
“I love this College,” said Hovey. “It’s where I graduated and where I wanted to come back.” Of her decision to return to Wallace, Hovey added, “I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. Where else would I go?”
As healthcare systems across the nation face ongoing nursing shortages, WCCD continues to prepare skilled, compassionate professionals ready to meet workforce needs. Hovey’s story is a reminder that dedication to service and learning knows no age limit.
