WCCD 2026 Adult Education Salutatorian Ja’Taryin Jones celebrates at the conclusion of his graduation ceremony address.
Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) has been selected to receive funding from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for the College’s Adult Education department through its project, Removing Barriers Through Adult Literacy Skills & Certifications.
The $10,000 Adult Literacy Grant will expand access to literacy instruction, GED preparation and workforce certifications for adult learners across Barbour, Bullock, Henry and Houston counties. The project is designed to reduce financial barriers while strengthening pathways to personal advancement and employment.
“I am deeply grateful for the Dollar General Family Literacy Foundation’s investment in education, empowerment, and community transformation,” said Barbara Steger, WCCD Adult Education Director. “Thank you to everyone who continues to support the mission of helping adult learners overcome barriers and achieve their goals.”
The Removing Barriers Through Adult Literacy Skills & Certifications project is anticipated to serve 117 adult learners, including 97 GED preparation students and 20 Adult Basic Education Integrated Education and Training (IET) participants. Instruction will focus on strengthening reading, math and academic persistence while aligning workforce training with industry-recognized certifications such as Pharmacy Technician, Medical Coding and Billing, Pre-CDL, ACE/MAPS and WorkKeys.
Students will receive instruction through a blended model that includes classroom-based learning, small-group instruction, one-on-one support and distance learning. Educational gains will be measured using the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), GED Ready practice testing and industry certification exams.
The grant funds will be used to offset GED testing fees and industry certification exam costs, ensuring that testing expenses do not prevent learners from completing credentials.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 to honor Dollar General co-founder J.L. Turner and supports literacy programs that help individuals learn to read, prepare for high school equivalency testing or learn English.
