WCCD President Dr. Kathy Murphy makes a welcome address to the Spring 2026 nursing graduates.

Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) is celebrating a milestone year under the leadership of Dr. Kathy L. Murphy, with June 1, 2026, marking one year of progress, growth, and forward-looking initiatives that are positioning the College for an exciting future.

Since assuming the presidency one year ago, Dr. Murphy has led a transformative period focused on strengthening academic excellence, enhancing workforce development, expanding student opportunities, and deepening community partnerships across the region.

“Wallace Community College has an extraordinary legacy of serving students and communities throughout the Wiregrass,” said Dr. Murphy. “This first year has been centered on listening, building strong relationships, and laying the foundation for the College’s next era of innovation and growth.”

“What a remarkable first year it has been for Dr. Kathy Murphy at Wallace Community College,” said Alabama Community College System Chancellor Jimmy H. Baker. “She stepped into an institution with a proud legacy and hit the ground running, ensuring that the momentum already underway never missed a beat. With heart, energy, and relentless focus, she has carried Wallace forward through strengthened community partnerships, a bold academic master plan, growing enrollment, and exciting capital projects — all anchored by an unwavering commitment to Making Life Better for the people of the Wiregrass. On behalf of the Alabama Community College System, I congratulate Dr. Murphy on this first anniversary and look forward to witnessing her continued impact for years to come.”

One of the administration’s major accomplishments during the past year has been the completion of the senior leadership team designed to support the College’s strategic priorities and long-term vision.

Three new leadership positions have recently been added. To support capital projects and campus enhancement, the Dean for Capital Projects, Maintenance, and Operations began work in May. In April, the Dean for Career Technical Education and Workforce Development was named. This position is particularly important as our two-year colleges lead the state as the workforce training provider. In January, the Dean for Health Sciences was named.

These additions reflect the College’s commitment to expanding high-demand academic and workforce programs while preparing for significant institutional growth in the years ahead.

Under Dr. Murphy’s leadership, the College also initiated the development of a new strategic plan that will guide WCCD through the coming years. The plan focuses on student success, workforce alignment and innovation, and institutional excellence.

Jeff Brannon, Wallace Foundation Board member and Flowers Hospital Vice President for Business Development, voiced that “Dr. Murphy has quickly established herself as a collaborative and forward-thinking leader who understands the important role the College plays in preparing the future workforce of our region. Her emphasis on healthcare education aligns closely with the needs of our medical community. We are grateful for her leadership and excited about the opportunities ahead for both the College and the Wiregrass.”

In conjunction with the strategic planning process, the College has developed a comprehensive master plan for future capital projects that will transform the campus and enhance the student experience. The proposed improvements are designed to support instructional needs, expand training capacity, and create innovative learning environments that meet the evolving demands of industry and higher education.

Also, as part of a comprehensive response to workforce demands throughout the region, the College is preparing to launch several new academic and technical programs. Diesel Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician, and Biomedical Equipment Technology have been submitted for approval, and the College expects these options will soon be available for students.

These programs will provide students with additional pathways to high-wage, high-demand careers while supporting critical workforce needs across healthcare, transportation, and technical industries.

Throughout her first year, Dr. Murphy has prioritized community engagement and collaboration with stakeholders across the Wiregrass region. She has met extensively with business and industry leaders, elected officials, educators, alumni, donors, community organizations, and College supporters to strengthen partnerships and ensure the College remains responsive to regional needs.

City of Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba remarked, “Over the past year, Dr. Murphy has brought tremendous energy, vision, and momentum to our area. Her focus on workforce development, academic excellence, and community partnerships is making a positive impact throughout Dothan and the Wiregrass region. The City of Dothan values the College as one of our greatest community assets, and we are excited about the direction Dr. Murphy is leading the institution.”

Her commitment to accessibility and collaboration has reinforced WCCD’s role as a vital educational and economic partner for Southeast Alabama.

“Dr. Kathy Murphy’s first year at Wallace Community College has demonstrated a strong commitment to aligning education with the workforce needs of our region. From planning new high-demand programs to expanding relationships with business and industry leaders, she is helping position the Wiregrass for continued economic growth and success. Our business community is impressed with her drive and energy and pursuit of excellence,” said Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker.

“I have enjoyed getting to know Dr. Murphy over the last year and learning about her vision for Wallace Community College. I am especially excited about her plans for the Sparks Campus, and I look forward to working with her to help bring these plans to fruition,” shared Rhonda Harrison, Executive Director, Henry County Economic Development Authority.

The College also expanded student life opportunities through the addition of several new athletic programs. Golf and cross country began last year. Volleyball is slated as the next sport to be added.

“These new sports programs are designed to enhance campus engagement, provide additional opportunities for student-athletes, and continue building a vibrant collegiate experience for Wallace students,” stated Dr. Murphy.

As WCCD enters its next chapter, College leaders say the momentum generated during Dr. Murphy’s first year reflects a strong commitment to continued growth, innovation, and student success. “This is such an exciting time to be a part of Wallace,” said Dr. Ashli Wilkins, WCCD Vice President and Dean of Institutional Services and Community Development. “Dr. Murphy has a laser focus on transforming our College with new facilities, instructional programs, and services that will enhance the storied success of Wiregrass students and citizens for years to come. In just one year, we have seen the expansion of academic and workforce opportunities along with capital investments that will strengthen our campus and community for generations. Her leadership has energized our faculty, staff, students, and community partners around a shared mission of excellence and innovation.”

“The future of Wallace Community College is incredibly bright,” said Dr. Murphy. “We are building on a strong foundation while preparing students and our communities for the opportunities ahead. I am grateful for the support of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners as we continue moving the College forward together.”
