WCCD Athletic Director John Rushing
Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) is pleased to announce the hiring of John Rushing as the College’s new Athletic Director, effective June 1, 2025.
Rushing brings nearly five years of experience as the Assistant Athletics Director at Chipola College in Marianna, Florida, and a career marked by integrity, leadership, and success across multiple levels of athletics administration. His arrival signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter in WCCD athletics, as the Govs will add five new sports beginning this fall.
“I was looking for a different opportunity—whatever was the right thing or whatever needed to happen,” said Rushing. “It was something about adding new sports and being a part of something different that really drew me in. I knew Wallace supported its athletics well. Coming back to Alabama, where I’ve spent most of my life, just felt right. Once I started the process, I realized this was something I really wanted to do and be a part of.”
Outgoing Athletics Director Dr. Ryan Spry, who will transition to an administrative oversight role within Student and Campus Services, expressed full confidence in Rushing’s leadership.
“After an exhaustive search, it became apparent that John Rushing was the right person to lead our department into an exciting, new chapter of Govs athletics,” Dr. Spry said. “John has a strong and established background in athletic administration within the NJCAA and checked all of the boxes we were looking for. His expertise in academic eligibility, financial management, travel logistics, and gameday operations will be invaluable to our coaching staff and student-athletes.”
Despite never playing college or high school baseball, Rushing carved out an impressive coaching career, including restarting the highly regarded Troy Post 70 American Legion program, serving as a high school coach, American Legion coach, and Director of Baseball Operations at Troy University. While his background is rooted in baseball, Rushing is a vocal advocate for all sports and all athletes.
