The Medical Assisting Program Faculty supports the mission, statement of purpose, and goals of Wallace Community College.
MAT Mission Statement: The Medical Assisting Program seeks to provide quality education and training that promotes personal growth of the individual student and to develop skills necessary to succeed in the workplace.
MAT Program Goals / Objectives:
Goal # 1
Provide quality education and training that develops the potential of each student to become a productive and responsible member of society and a skilled member of the medical assisting workforce.
Objective: Graduates are able to satisfactorily perform entry-level medical assisting functions and demonstrate appropriate communication and interpersonal skills, as well as general employment skills needed in the workplace.
Goal # 2
Provide academic advising and educational guidance to students that assist them in pursuing instructional opportunities.
Objective: Graduates successfully complete the program within/near the scheduled time frame.
Goal # 3
Participate in faculty professional development and teaching, research, and public service activities.
Objective: Faculty members participate in scheduled professional development activities and meet personal and program needs for research and public service activities.
Goal # 4
Provide classes and labs with the most up-to-date equipment and supplies.
Objective: Employer and advisory committees’ input should indicate that classes and facilities meet or exceed business and industry standards.
Goal # 5
Meet or exceed the annual performance standards established by (MAERB).
Objective: Data indicates that the program meets or exceeds (MAERB) national performance standards for program and student success.
MAT Statement of Purpose:
The Program has a two-fold purpose: (1) To prepare medical assistants who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession, and (2) preparing student students to successfully write the American Association of Medical Assistants Certifying Board examination in order to become a certified medical assistant.
The program objectives are in accord with the Standards and Guidelines of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). The graduate medical assistant is expected to possess the following competencies adopted by the MAERB as identified in the Core Curriculum for Medical Assistants 2008 Curriculum Plan.
